PART 1: Nice 9pt down baby!

You might want to grab a cup of coffee before you start reading this thread, it's a long story...

The END of the story is in these pics. I was VERY fortunate to have a chance to take my first ever late season buck and it was one that we had been after all season. We had been following this 9pt on our cams since mid-summer this year. I ended up with more than 800 trail cam shots of this particular buck, he was not camera shy in his feeding spots! It was a great thrill to take a nice buck that was on our target list and one that had spent so much of his time on our little piece of private hunting grounds.

The REST of the story (anyone remember Paul Harvey?) follows in consecutive posts...

PART 2: Pre season trail cam pics

Usually I get several trail cameras out in the woods early spring to get pics of the various bucks in our area as they grow their antlers. This year I was a bit slow in getting my act together. I had some cams go bad on me the prior season and I needed new ones (procrastinated on that because there were not any cams that I had any real confidence in to buy!). In June I did put out one of my prior year cams that I thought was still working in a normal feeding spot (an apple ‘orchard’) but it failed to take ANY pics! Primos cams SUCK! It’s no surprise to me that they are now out of the cam business. I got some replacements of the bad Primos cams and purchased some new Moultrie cams that had good reviews and set them up in late July.

In September, I posted pics of some of the nice bucks that started showing up on the cams:

PART 3: Opening weekend of archery season

The opening weekend of archery my buddy and I took a couple of extra days and hunted Saturday thru Tuesday. My trail cams ‘said’ I should be in the apples tree stands since one particular 9pt was in there CONSTANTLY! That fella was clearly ADDICTED to the taste of sweet apples, he was in there on my cam morning, afternoon (prime times!), and overnight. That weekend it seemed that whenever I hunted that stand he would either not come that time or he was there when I wasn’t, WTF man! Well, on Tuesday morning (last day of that particular hunt) it turned out he was there BEFORE I arrived, but I didn’t know that…

Later that morning after sitting in the stand for several hours I picked up my trail cam memory cards, went back to camp and looked them over as I always do each day. I found this set of pics that you will clearly be able to tell when I had showed up at that stand in the morning. Yeah, I was a bit late in getting there but he was there for an hour and a half before so it wouldn’t have mattered what time I arrived. Damn, I had spooked him hard…

Cool pics though!

PART 4: Passed on nice 8pt

Frustrated at having spooked one of my target bucks, I went back out that afternoon to the same stand because he was not the only buck that was enjoying the apples and I was hopeful that the 9pt still just HAD to have those apples that he’d been eating all summer.

The afternoon was somewhat uneventful, I could have taken a big doe but passed because I did not want to mess the area up for a potential buck sighting that afternoon. Then late in the day about when I was thinking about us getting back to camp and cleaning up and making the three hour drive home and heading to work the next day, a really nice 8pt was sneaking in behind me to get some apples. When he got into clear view I watched him, I studied him, I knew he was a shooter for us, I knew he was one of the target bucks, I was in decision mode, should I? shouldn’t I? should wait for the 9pt? should I hope one of the bigger bucks would give me an opportunity later that season? While going through that thought process, he set up in the apples at merely 12 yards and I had the crossbow scope dead on the kill zone. I let him go… And my cam took a picture of him too. Would I regret this decision? I did often regret it and for most of the season!

I posted that story and more pics here:

PART 5: I WANT that 9pt!

Well, now I guess knew which buck I REALLY wanted. The 9pt prolly wasn’t as wide as that 8pt I had let go but I had never shot a 9pt in all my years and he was still dang nice, and I was obviously hooked! Plus I knew there were other bucks in the region that were more to my liking too. Ten years ago I was shooting 4pts and 6pts in this area and quite happy about it, now I was letting 8pts walk away! How cool is that? I love antler the restrictions!

Anyway, I was now worried that maybe I had spooked that 9pt a lil too hard. Nah! He was back showing up on the apples cam most days and still showing at prime times too. WAHOO!

PART 6: The 9pt has a sparing partner

The following weekend I picked up my cam picks and was relieved that the 9pt still had his apple addiction. But it looks like he doesn’t share very well. Here is a series of pics capturing him in a sparing battle with one of his competitors. Cool stuff man! But I also was learning that it was going to be nearly impossible to get this buck at first light because he was showing up too early even though he would hang around until it was light. I was going to have to hunt this stand in the afternoons and hope for the best that he would show for a snack before last light.

AWESOME pics eh!

PART 7: The 9pt disappears…

Well he started showing late, but only after dark, dang! Was it my fault? Did his habits change as his big buck instincts kicked in?

Then it turned out that this was one of the last picks we would see of this 9pt. He had disappeared off of our properties and all cams. He was GONE! No picks, no sightings, nothing. I could only assume that he was taken by another area hunter. Disappointment had set in…
