Reel Reverse... WHY?!?

Unread postby Zamboni » Thu Aug 27, 2015 10:25 pm

I have been fishing 30+ years and have always questioned why spinning reels have a reverse switch, I recently ( last year) bought a Penn Battle 4000, it has no reverse... GENIOUS!
I have never used the reverse on any reel in all my years of fishing and only found it a hinderence. As the reel wears the reverse switch slips, which many of us I'm sure have experienced. So why do reels have this feature?
In my opinion it's useless! Kudos to Penn for excluding it on the Battle.

It's for when you catch one you can't or don't want to keep. Flip the switch and lower him in. Reel backwards until he gets
All the way back to where you hooked him and he will spit the hook out. Sometimes a bigger one will hop right on. The reel company's have been helping people with this feature for years but only a few reel seasoned (see what I did there) anglers know this trick.... Give it a shot but don't tell too many guys.

I believe it is used as a technique for fighting fish
that stems from a time before drag systems were perfected ... Now that drag systems have become so reliable the switch is becoming obsolete on newer reels..

Yea not really sure. It would be kinda hard to slow a fish down that was peeling line with a handle doin 50mph. Haha. Always wondered that myself. Never ever have used it.

Google results say it was for playing fish and also like a baitrunner when ya get a bite. Its worthless. Ever get a hit and fumble? Then hit the switch? Then try and set hook? Then fumble worse? Then fish is lost? I have.

My grand pop uses it when he missed a flounder bite to let line out or to keep on the bottom in the ocean
Seems to work well I have picked up his method and doing it when I miss a flounder hook up as well.

Just my thought
If u use the reverse and a fish bites while your go it line u can feel it and still set the hook.
If u just flip the bail u won't be able to accurately control the line.
Kinda like hand feeding the fish on wicked tuna again just my thought for all I know I'm competly wrong on what it's purpose is for but that's how I use it taught by my grand pop
