The Antler Almanac  June 11, 2014

June is here.  Summer weather has finally settled-in to stay.  With little human intrusion in their habitat, the deer are unstressed and enjoying life.

Though bucks’ antlers have been growing since mid-April, June is the month during which they gain the most in overall weight, tine length and spread.  They’ll continue to add inches and weight during July and August, but June is the big boost for what a healthy buck will display come Fall.

June also is a good time to start doing what you can to help an entire herd to maintain good health—fawns and yearlings as well as the mature deer.   I always preach the idea of having calcium and mineral blocks out year-round, but starting each year in June isn’t a bad practice, either.  A couple of years of providing mineral supplements, and you’ll see a huge increase in antler growth among a herd’s bucks.

Whitetail deer aren’t high-maintenance animals, but a little human help at the right time can pay big dividends for years to come.
